Nagito first comes off as a polite, friendly, and easygoing, yet somewhat insecure boy. He believes hope is an absolute good, and any deed done in the name of hope is righteous, even murder. He has little regard for his own well-being and doesn't care for his own life, and encourages the other students to kill him to achieve their own hope.
